Curro Kathu rugby standout earns Griquas U21 call-up after comeback year

Damian ‘Bees’ Maclean, a Curro Kathu learner with over a decade of competitive rugby experience, has been selected for the U21 Griquas squad in 2025. Known for his composure, strategic vision, and powerful forward play, Damian has shown what it takes to return stronger after serious injury.

From Curro Kathu to Craven Week

Damian’s rugby journey began in 2013 and found momentum after he joined Curro Kathu in 2019. Over the years, he earned several provincial selections – most notably representing the Griquas at U13, U15, and U18 Craven Week levels. In 2023, he captained the first team and was selected to represent the Griquas at the U18 Craven Week tournament.

‘It was a privilege to be chosen, and I am grateful for the opportunity,’ he said.

Setback and return

In 2024, Damian suffered a serious ankle injury that forced him to pause the game for an entire year. Rather than stepping back, he recommitted himself to training with precision and purpose. His return to form was marked by two major achievements in 2025: selection to the U21 Griquas squad and being named Man of the Match in the U21 Northern Cape Regional Competition.

‘It was a difficult setback, but I refused to let it define me. I pushed harder, trained smarter, and came back stronger than ever,’ said Damian. ‘That moment proved to me that perseverance always wins.’

Rugby IQ and off-field growth

Damian credits his success to discipline, technical skill, and a high rugby IQ. He consistently works to read the game, create scoring opportunities, and lead his team with intent.

But his ambitions extend beyond the field. He is currently pursuing a qualification in Supply Chain Management through IMM. The academic programme, he says, is sharpening his ability to plan, problem-solve, and think long term.

‘Life and sport can be unpredictable – injuries, career transitions, and unforeseen challenges can arise at any time. That’s why I’ve made it a priority to invest in my education,’ Damian explained.

Career highlights include:

  • 2025 – U21 Griquas
  • 2025 – U21 NC Regional Competition (Man of the Match)
  • 2024 – UXI (Cheetahs Institute)

With an eye on national selection and a grounded view of the future, Damian continues to model the kind of work ethic that defines lasting success.
