Curro Midrand Sagewood to host Gauteng Cross-Country Championships

Curro Midrand Sagewood is gearing up for an action-packed day of athletics as we are set to host the Gauteng Provincial Cross-Country Championships on Saturday, 30 August 2025, in partnership with Gauteng Schools Athletics (GSA).

More than 2 800 athletes from 15 education districts will be giving it their all in hopes of securing a place on Team Gauteng ahead of the SASA National Cross-Country Championships, taking place on 4 October 2025 in White River, Mpumalanga. Only 120 athletes will be chosen to represent the province, which makes this one of the biggest highlights on Gauteng’s school sport calendar – and we're hosting it!

A course built for champions

Runners will be tackling our very own purpose-built cross-country trail, meticulously redeveloped to meet official standards without losing its natural beauty. The Midrand landscape offers the perfect setting, with rolling contours, short dips, gentle rises, and a few technical bends to keep athletes on their toes.

'This trail is a well-balanced blend of challenge, flow, and accessibility, tailored to test athletes across all age groups and levels of experience,' says Johann du Toit, Head of High School.

The course features a mix of compact soil paths and grassy stretches, designed for safe group movement and strategic racing – while still delivering that true cross-country feel.

Who’s racing?

The championship welcomes athletes from under 9 to under 19, including primary and high school learners as well as LSEN (Learners with Special Educational Needs) participants. Race distances will range from 2 km for the youngest competitors to 8 km for the senior boys, with a total of 21 races taking place throughout the day.

More than just a race

'Cross-country running holds a special place in South African school sport, attracting athletes who excel through determination and resilience,' Johann adds. 'It builds endurance, discipline, and competitive spirit – qualities that go beyond the track and into everyday life. That’s why this sport keeps growing: it rewards character just as much as natural ability.'
