Meridian Pinehurst learner speeds his way to nationals – and wins!

Dylan Calbert, a Grade 4 learner from Meridian Pinehurst in Durbanville, just won Gold at the SASA Primary School Nationals with an astonishing time of 10,82 seconds! This makes him the fastest under 10 athlete in the 80 m sprint in South Africa.

A 10-year-old learner from Meridian Pinehurst in Durbanville blitzed his way to a provincial record. With this, he is now the Western Cape’s fastest athlete for under 10 sprint events for 80 m and 100 m. He also smashed the provincial record of 10,93 seconds in the boys under 10 80 m sprint final, clocking 10,73.

Dylan Calbert, a Grade 4 learner at Meridian Pinehurst, joined the school’s athletics sports code a few years ago. He enjoyed an athletics meet shortly after joining so much, that he asked his parents to join an athletics club – and has never looked back since.

‘I cried a lot in the beginning, but it made me strong,’ Dylan shared. ‘It isn’t always about winning, but also important to have fun and enjoy myself. I am also grateful for all the opportunities I have received so far.’ His coach, Eugene, shared that he always knew Dylan would succeed. ‘He puts in a lot of effort during training sessions. He displayed great character and determination throughout the season.’

He draws inspiration from 400 m world record holder Wayde van Niekerk, who grew up in Kraaifontein, just like Dylan.
